    Mongolia | Khalkh | 2004 - 2007

    Population: 1,600,000
    Language: Altaic Family, Mongolic Branch
    Region: Mongolia, China Inner Mongolia

More than eighty percent of the Mongolian population is Khalkh. The Khalkh dialect is the official Mongolian language. Many Khalkh lead a nomadic existence but more than half have by now left the countryside for an urban environment. They have moved en masse to the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar and live there on the outskirts of the city in giant areas of gers (felt tents).
