The Dukha are related to the Tuvans of the neighbouring Tuva Republic. During the Eighties, the Communist regime forced the majority of the Dukha to relinquish their nomadic existence. The reindeer herdsmen had to settle in two collectives. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Dukha again chose to take to the forested taiga and now some forty nomadic families still live there.
